Common Energy Saving Tips
May 2009
Plug air leaks -
Common leaks occur around windows, doors and other wall penetrations such as outlets.
Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) -
These bulbs save energy and last longer. Changing five of your most frequently used bulbs can save you $100 per year on electric bills.
Program your thermostat -
Consider a programmable thermostat, which allows you to program the system to reduce output when its not needed (when no one is home
during the day or at night when everyone is sleeping).
Tune your heating and cooling system -
Make sure to have a checkup at least every two years to make sure your system is running efficiently. Clean the filter monthly.
Choose ENERGY STAR® appliances -
Energy Star®-qualified products meet a high level of energy efficiency, which will translate into savings on your energy bills.
Consider solar -
Light from the sun can be directly converted into electricity or heat through technology that uses solar cells or photovoltaic arrays.
Solar power can create electricity for your home, heat water and improve indoor lighting.
Reduce water consumption -
Inside, use aerators for sink faucets and change to low-flow showerheads. Outside, plant your yard with native plants and reduce high-maintenance landscaping such as turf grass.
Use low-VOC products -
By using paints and cleaning products that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOC) or contain none at all, you increase the indoor air quality of your home.
Use wood alternatives of FSC-certified products -
Consider using linoleum, bamboo, recycled-content tile or non-VOC carpet.
Use locally produced products -
This means less carbon emissions because of the shorter transportation for delivery of the products.
Plant tress to provide shade and wind protection -
These efforts can save you money on heating and air conditioning bills while enhancing the views around your home.
